About the teacherI was born and raised in Michigan. I have lived in Michigan, Nebraska, Texas, Hawaii and now Utah! I started my private studio on the North Shore of Oahu in 2007 while I was in college. In April of 2010 I graduated from Brigham Young University-Hawaii with a BA in Music. In Hawaii, I taught music at one of the local elementary schools, taught private lessons and ran an after school violin program. Outside of teaching, I have performed in the BYU-Hawaii University Orchestra, was the violinist in an Irish Folk band and sang in a woman's a capella choir.
My family is new to Utah as of summer 2016. I am currently growing my studio, working with the Suzuki Strings of Cedar City and am playing with the Orchestra of Southern Utah. Gold Music StudioStudio Policies

In order to receive the full benefits of musical study, daily practice is essential. Beginning students should practice 10-15 minutes twice a day, six days a week, seven if you can. Parents need to oversee this practice. As students progress, the amount of practice time needed will naturally increase. With our busy schedules and countless obligations each day, it is too easy to let the day slip by without practicing. But if practicing is established as a priority on your child's To-Do list, creating a daily habit, your efforts will be rewarded. The student will make consistent progress and they - and you - will enjoy their musical study much more. Listening to the Suzuki recording is also essential to your child’s musical progress. Please listen to the recording for at least an hour a day. It doesn’t have to be focused listening-it can be background music while they play, eat, go to sleep or wake up. The success of a young music student is usually directly proportioned to parental involvement in the learning process. Regardless of musical background, every parent can work with the teacher to make lessons a positive experience. Here are some suggestions: -Getting your child to lessons on time with the proper materials is the first step to success. -Expressing enthusiasm for your child's accomplishments provides strong incentive for him or her to continue making progress. -Reviewing the lesson with the child and being an audience to show your continuing interest in the child's improvement and underscore the importance of consistent practice. -Supporting the program set forth by the teacher and cooperating in recitals demonstrate your appreciation for music and musical training. Establishing a definite schedule for practicing is essential to developing a commitment for lessons. Unless practice time is given a high priority, it probably will not get done. Recording of lessons is encouraged, in any format convenient to you video, cassette, mp3, etc. These recordings are very helpful in home practice. Music and Materials I will try to give advance notice when supplies are needed for your child. Please get them in a timely manner so that progress will not be delayed. Nurtured By Love, Shinichi Suzuki Ability Development from Age Zero, Shinichi Suzuki Recitals A formal recital offers a tangible incentive for perfecting skills and sharing music with an appreciative audience. We will schedule one at the end of each semester. Suzuki Association of Utah Memberships are $35 for your family. I recommend that you join (see website here). This gives you a discount for group lessons with Suzuki Strings Cedar City (see below) and the graduation recital so within a year you have recovered your membership for the family. It also allows you to participate in state activities. We are very appreciative of SAU for helping fund the regional workshop. The regional workshop takes place in November. The SAU also provides training and other opportunities for the teachers. Southern Utah String Festival In addition to recitals, each student will prepare and participate in the Southern Utah String Festival, held in March. It is a wonderful opportunity to prepare and showcase their learned skills! Studio Guidelines It is a privilege to attend music lessons in a quiet, pleasant atmosphere with easy access to musical resources, teaching aids and recordings. The following guidelines are necessary in order to maintain the integrity of my studio and to provide a peaceful, positive teaching and learning space for myself and for my students. -Only the student(s) attending and one parent or guardian may enter at a time. -Only siblings who have back-to-back lessons may wait quietly. It is strongly encouraged that each child brings something interesting to keep themselves occupied while they are waiting. -If you are a parent with a beginner and you have been invited to sit in on their lessons, it is vital that you do not interrupt the lesson. -Do not bring food or drink. -Please turn off cell phones during lesson time. -Drop off and pick up children on time. Your cooperation is appreciated! Commitment Expectation When you enroll in lessons, you are committing to attend lessons for a minimum of six months. The beginner period is crucial. This commitment is expected of all students, young and adult. Students experience the most growth in music when they have constant contact with their teacher over an extended period of time. I expect students to be present regularly at lessons/classes to ensure their continual development. Group Lessons ***Highly Encouraged*** At this time I am not requiring attendance at group lessons though I ~strongly~ recommend that my students attend. Group lessons in the community with other students and teachers are through Suzuki Strings Cedar City. There is an additional semester cost ($80/semester for one student, $10 for each additional student in the family). SSCC meets on the campus of Southern Utah University in the Thorley Music building. It is a wonderful collaboration of teachers and a great experience for the students. There are book level specific classes and ensemble classes. The students have a performance each semester. Group classes meet every Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 pm starting in September. I absolutely endorse and encourage it! I know that this is a lot of information. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions! I have come to the definite conclusion that musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. |
